Who Was Cephas In The Bible

Cephas is mentioned once in the bible in John 1 20 There were therefore of the Pharisees who believed (but secretly); and they said to Peter, “You are also one of them; for you are a Galilean, and your speech betrays you” .

Cephas, who is also referred to as Simon and in English is known as Peter, was a Greek-speaking Jew and Apostle of Jesus, who led the early church in Jerusalem following the death of Jesus.

Cephas is a name which occurs several times in the New Testament. The name itself is derived from the Hebrew word “Kefi,” meaning “rock,” and it appears to have originally been applied, in the Old Testament, to Abraham himself, as the rock upon which God would build his Church (cf. 1 Corinthians 10:4).

The question at hand is who was Cephas in the Bible? The original Greek used in scripture literally translates Cephas as Rock. However, there are many other characters in the Bible with this name.

There are 2 people named Cephas in the Bible. Both Cephas are apostles of Jesus and one is also known as Saint Peter. In Acts 1:13-14, there is a reference to a disciple named Cephas who was found at the Mount of Olives. Peter implored him to come to the place where they were staying to eat together. John 21:2 mentions a man named Cephas when it says that John (the Apostle) recognized him as someone who had fish just days earlier, and he called him by name.

But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them, Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and the elders about this question. So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and brought great joy to all the brothers. When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they declared all that God had done with them. But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees rose up and said, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses.”
