Before undertaking any fast, Christians pray a special prayer. It includes a request to do something positive while not doing something negative. For example, “We fast in order to bring glory to You. We ask that You will make us purer of heart, more detached from earthly things, and more sensitive to Your love.”

Listed below are some things to pray for if you are fasting or intend to fast. If you find it difficult to recite the whole prayer, then remember that a single letter is enough for God. Also bear in mind that reciting at least any one of these prayers will give the same reward as reciting the whole of it.

Any person who decides to fast should, before beginning to fast, choose a specific and general prayer to say while fasting. This prayer must be recited at the same time every day.

Prayer To Say While Fasting

Lord, as I begin this time of fasting, fill me with your strength. Help me to use this as a time of growth, renewal, and healing. Calm my anxiety about what I might be giving up or times of discomfort that I might face.

Provide me with assurance that You will strengthen me during the difficult times and meet me for sweet moments of spiritual growth and surrender.

Help me focus not on what is being taken away, but what I’m gaining as I use this as a spiritual discipline. With you leading, Holy Spirit, I am ready.

I dedicate this fast to You, Lord, and to Your glory.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Let Him Know You’re Here With Your Heart Wide Open

Oh, Lord! I enter into this sanctuary or fasting with a broken heart. Here I am, at the foot of your cross.

I know you love me, as I could feel the love of your heartbeat. Thank you for the grace to breathe. Thank you for my life. Here are my hands, Lord guide, and lead me. I’m waiting, hoping, watching, and listening for your powerful hands in my life, Oh Lord!  I’m here with all my heart wide open.

Prayer For Seeking God’s Understanding And Wisdom

It takes God’s wisdom and understanding, even to know the prayers to pray at any moment.  He’s the omnipotent and omniscient God. The only true living God. So, you need to ask for his understanding and wisdom during a period of fasting and prayer.  You could say

Dear Father,

All praise, glory, honor, and adoration be to you, the only one and true living God.

For you are the revealer of all mysteries and the source of all wisdom and understanding. Thank you for knowledge, thank you for understanding, thank you for throwing light into where darkness enshrouds.  Lord, we pray for wisdom and understanding to further understand your words so that we can live according to them.

In Jesus name

Amen

Prayer to Say Before Eating While Fasting

This is a prayer you say while after a period of fasting while breaking your fast. You could say

Lord!  Bless this food that I’m about to eat now. Provide for those who don’t have anything to eat right now. For I have fasted, I know you have poured new refreshment, peace, and passion into my heart.

Please help to keep hold of this new treasure in my heart so that I won’t trespass. Lord, remind me each day to not follow worldly things and taking comfort of food.  Thank you for this food and drink. Amen.

Prayer to Resist Temptation

Temptations are an inevitable part of human life. It’s sure to happen, and nobody is above it. Even Jesus wasn’t above it. However, he overcame it.  Jesus, being tempted, gave us the best example of how to overcome temptation.

Looking at the book of Matthew, chapter 4 – verses 1,2. It says, “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry.” Satan then tempted him with food. But he answered, ‘It is written; “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’” (Matthew 4:3-4).

This is why you need to pray and ask God for the power to resist temptation. Ask him to lead you in the path of righteousness. Ask for his help to walk in his obedience, because it is only through it that we can live and flourish and extend our days.
