His family moved from place to place frequently as his father worked as a missionary pilot flying medical supplies across Africa and Asia.

His parents were part of the Wycliffe Bible Translators, and his father was an aviation missionary with Missionary Aviation Fellowship. Tyson’s mother was a nurse and he had one younger brother named Michael who tragically died in 2014 at age 42 after being diagnosed with cancer. As a child, Tyson lived in places such as Kenya, Uganda, Malaysia, and Taiwan. His family later returned to the United States where they settled in Northern California until 1975 when they moved to New York City.
Jon attended high school in Uganda and Honduras before moving back to the United States when he was 18 years old with plans to go into ministry or politics.

However, he ended up going into business instead because he wanted more stability for his family when he got married one day – which eventually did happen when Jon wed Julie Paveglio on January 2nd 2003 at their church in New York City.
