Jonah 1:17-2:10 is the story of Jonah and the whale. This is one of the most famous stories in the Bible, and it’s a great example of God using a bad situation for good.

Jonah was a prophet from Israel who tried to run from God’s call on his life. He was told to go preach to Nineveh, but instead he went on a boat trip to Tarshish (which is further away). But God sent a storm so they would turn back and bring him to Nineveh. Jonah got angry at God because he didn’t want to help the people who were going to be destroyed, so he tried to run away again by getting off the boat in Joppa (Jaffa). Then he found himself in a vineyard with a bunch of grapes that were ripe enough to eat right away—but instead of eating them, he slept under a bush. That night an angel woke him up and told him to preach against Nineveh because they were going to be destroyed in 40 days if they didn’t repent!

So Jonah went back on board ship and started preaching about how God was going to destroy them all in 40 days unless they changed their ways—but nobody believed him

Jonah 2:1 – 1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish,2 saying, “I called out to the LORD, ‘O LORD, I pray You, save me from my foe and my enemy.’ 3 For He had cast me into the sea; and the sea was more than I could bear. So He sent an abundance of fish to cover my head.”

Jonah 1:17-2:10

1:17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. 2:1 Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly, 2:2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. 2:3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. 2:4 And I said, I am cast out of thy sight; how shall I go forth? 2:5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
