The Christian faith does not stand on the foundation of a single text, but a canon (or complete library) of books that belong together — not because they appear in the same “form,” but because they share a common life. The Old Testament and the New Testament are community libraries, not solo acts. This is why no passage in the Bible stands alone. But it is also why every passage in the Bible grows over time to be part of a larger library held within the lives of Christian communities and in relation to new historical circumstances. What do you think this verse means? Why was the apostle Peter so concerned that his listeners might misunderstand his words and misinterpret them as an excuse to sin? What would happen if you misused what you’ve learned from this bible study on 2 peter 1.

The book of 2 Peter is a letter written by the Apostle Peter to Christians in the first century who were facing persecution and suffering for their faith. In the letter, he warns them about false teachers and encourages them to remain strong in their faith when faced with hardships.

Peter’s words are meant to encourage believers to stay true to Christ when they are being persecuted and tested. He urges them not to give up hope or become discouraged because of their suffering but rather trust that God will keep His promises of a new heaven and new earth where there will be no more pain, sorrow or death (Revelation 21:4).

2 Peter 1:3-11 (NIV)

His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that he has been cleansed from his past sins. Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things you will never fall,

2 Peter

[1] Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:

[2] Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;

[3] seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.

[4] For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.

[5] And again, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

2 Peter 3:2-7

2 This is now the second letter I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder,3 so that you may recall the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles.4 First of all you must understand this, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires.5 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”6 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water,7 through which the world at that time was destroyed when it was flooded with water.

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.

For this very reason, making every effort…
