All The Words Of Jesus In The Bible

According to the New Testament, Jesus spoke over 3,000 words during his earthly ministry (see Matthew 12:47-50). If we add up all of the words spoken by Jesus in the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), it comes out to 3,425 words. However, not all of these words were recorded in each Gospel. For example:

o The Gospel of Mark records 1,912 words spoken by Jesus; whereas Matthew records 2,016 words; Luke 2,536; and John 1,337.

o Matthew records more than any other Gospel because he focuses primarily on teaching about Christ’s divinity and fulfilling Old Testament prophecy.

It’s true: Jesus said a lot of things. But did he say them all?

Some people think so. You’ve probably heard that the Bible contains all the words of Jesus, and you probably believe it. But do you remember the story where Jesus told Peter he would be crucified? Or when he told his disciples that they would have to eat his flesh and drink his blood? Those stories are missing from the Bible.

Or maybe you’ve heard of a book called The Gospel Of Thomas. It’s got some pretty good stuff in it—it mentions how to get into heaven and how not to worry about anything—but it also has some strange stuff, like Jesus saying that if someone calls on him in vain, he will not hear them at all. That doesn’t sound like Jesus! And yet there’s no mention of this book anywhere in the New Testament or even in early Christian writings.

So what does this mean? Is it possible that there are certain stories about Jesus from ancient times that got left out of the Bible because they weren’t considered important enough? Or is it possible that there were other writings about Jesus that just got lost over time?

Jesus in the Bible is the only begotten son of God. He is also the light of the world and the way, truth and life (John 1:1-18). You see, Jesus was born to die for our sins on a cross so we can have eternal life (John 3:16). The Bible tells us that there are only two ways to spend eternity when death comes: with God in heaven or separated from him in hell (Matthew 7:13-14).

Jesus is referred to as a shepherd over 100 times throughout scripture because he loves us so much! It’s what he does best—he cares for his sheep like no other shepherd ever has before or will again (John 10:11, 14-15).
